What Is ReligIion?

If a religion is a system of indoctrination, control, and exploitation, then Scientology certainly qualifies as such.  But if that’s the nature of religion then why should it be under constitutional protection?  To answer the question we must understand what religion was to the founders of our republic.  On the most basic level religion is a form of philosophy and as such it must answer certain questions: What is everything (including man)?  How do we know this?  And what should we do?  As with all proper systems of thought a religion describes the nature of existence and how we know it.  The nature of Human life and how to live it.
