"There was once, O men of Athens, something in the minds of the people that is no longer there --something that defeated the might and wealth of Persia, that vindicated the liberty of Greece, the was never conquered on land or sea, and that is now gone, leaving all Greece in turmoil and dismay.
"And what was that? Nothing elaborate or abstruse, but the simple fact all men hated those who took bribes from the seekers of power and the agents of subversion. That was accounted the greatest of crimes, so that he who was convicted of having been corrupted of bribes or by favors was condemned to the ultimate penalty, with no room for excuse and no hope for pardon.
... But now everything is for sale ... For what are now the consequnces of treason? Envy, for those who have profited; laughter for those who confess; pardon for those who are convicted; and hatred--hatred is now reserved for the man who speaks harshly of treason."

Staples employees shirts spark gang attack
PETALUMA, Calif. (AP) - Petaluma police say two Staples office supply store employees and a shopping center customer were beaten recently by gang members, apparently for wearing red clothing.
The attacks happened Friday near the Staples office supply store in Petaluma, where two workers and another person were assaulted.
Two 17-year-olds, a boy and a girl, were later arrested.
Petaluma Police Sergeant Dave Kahl says a Staples employee was standing outside the store when the suspects began yelling gang slogans and challenging him to fight. He started to walk into the store when they attacked him with their fists.
The suspects were booked into Sonoma County Juvenile Hall.
If Republicans hope to win the presidency next year, they better find a candidate who is prepared to stand for very bold, very dramatic and very systematic change in Washington. Not only that, but they had better make the case that the left-wing Democrat likely to be nominated represents the failed statusquo : the bureaucracies that are failing, the social policies that are failing, the high tax policies that are failing, and the weakness around the world that has failed so badly in protecting America.

Jeff Ruby, owner of the steakhouse Jeff Ruby’s Louisville, asked O.J. Simpson to leave his restaurant minutes after Simpson arrived about 10:30 Friday night.
Told by a customer that the former football player had arrived at the restaurant, 325 W. Main St., Ruby said, he informed Simpson, “I am not serving you.”
“He had a party of 10 or 12 people,” said Ruby, who had served Simpson many times at his Cincinnati restaurants before the 1994 murders of Nicole Brown and Ronald Goldman, of which Simpson was acquitted.
“This was the only thing I could do for the victims’ families,” said Ruby. He said the 50 or so people in the private room where Simpson had been seated “stood up and applauded me” when Simpson left.
“And who walks in five minutes later?” asked Ruby.

Years after the end of the war, American G.I.'s were often asked why they fought so hard in the Second World War and the answer was almost always the same:
"So my kids don't have to come over here and do this again"
Americans of that war and that generation, knew the high cost that comes from an incomplete victory and a policy of isolation because they had learned the lesson of 1919. The American nation was shocked at the cost of the First World War and chose to enter a period of isolation afterwards but the result was not peace, but the rise of Hitler and the Japanese Empire. The cost of the 'peace movement' that formed at the end of the First World War could be measured in real terms of the 52 million people world wide who died in the second period of conflict.
It was a conflict that could've been avoided. The conflict of the Second World War and its horrid cost in lives is what inspired a generation to do what it could to ensure that the lives spent in that conflict would not be wasted by the nation being forced in the next generation of American soldiers being sent to the soil of Europe to fight yet another war.
Those who profess to be a part of the "peace movement" need to understand that the emotion of "wanting peace" alone is almost never enough to actually gain the peace they so desire. On occasion, you have to demonstrate that you are willing to fight to be able to maintain the peace that you have. A large number of military people for over 60 years dedicated their lives to the cause of maintaining peace in Europe. Lives were lost, large amounts treasure were expened, and it took three generations to fully accomplish the mission of peace in Europe, but the true price of peace is never cheap or easy or fast. The cost of failure to remainvigilent fills the graveyards of battlefield after battlefield all across the world.
Getting shot hurts.

Insofar as I may be heard by anything, which may or may not care what I say, I ask, if it matters, that you be forgiven for anything you may have done or failed to do which requires forgiveness. Conversely, if not forgiveness but something else may be required to insure any possible benefit for which you may be eligible after the destruction of your body, I ask that this, whatever it may be, be granted or withheld, as the case may be, in such a manner as to insure your receiving said benefit. I ask this in my capacity as your elected intermediary between yourself and that which may not be yourself, but which may have an interest in the matter of your receiving as much as it is possible for you to receive of this thing, and which may in some way be influenced by this ceremony. Amen.

The Ventura administration riled media organizations Tuesday by issuing credentials to state Capitol reporters that feature Gov. Jesse Ventura's photo and identify the wearer as an ``official jackal.''
The large, colorful credentials were delivered to about 30 radio, television and newspaper reporters in the Capitol on Tuesday morning, along with a press release citing ``security issues and accountability of who attends official Governor's Office events.''

When we start to seriously do deep space exploration, I think “Earth” should do it. There is utterly no sense in doing it other than as a planetary civilization. It is insane, in my opinion, to be out in space and look back at this tiny little planet that is no bigger than a pinhead at a distance and say: “I come from the United States.” You come from Earth, if you came from anywhere! Exploring the cosmos in a planetary issue, not a national issue. Sure, we got started in our nationalistic period, but sooner or later, if we want to do this seriously, it has to be done as a planetary civilization.
– Dr. Edgar Mitchell, Interviewed in Artemis, Issue #4, Winter 2001.
We are still a type “0" civilization, just emerging from the trees. When we get ourselves together and know how to utilize cooperatively all the energy available on our planet, we can become a type “1" civilization. At that point, we can begin to colonize outer space.

If Atta had followed his own instructions that morning, carefully written out in a document entitled “The Last Night,” he had shaved excess hair from his body, dabbed on cologne, and sharpened his knife. He was instructed to pray, continuously, in the cab, in the airport, on the flight to Boston and as he took his seat in the first-class cabin on Flight 11. “Be happy,” he had written himself, “optimistic, calm, because you are heading for a deed God loves and will accept. It will be the day, God willing, you spend with the women of paradise.”

After an undistinguished term as Senator from New York, Hillary is now running for President (or Goddess Empress.) She may be a good enough politician to pull it off, especially if the Republicans nominate a loser to oppose her. (Of course the Democrats may throw her over for Obama, on the theory that she's yesterday's woman and Barak is a fresh, new, exciting face,) But one thing is for certain. She would be a horrible President, the sort of President that wrecks economies and loses wars. And that's a risk that cannot be taken.
"Extraordinary," Francis Urquhart said, reading through the Times. He had taken to doing his morning news reading on the computer, which was in itself extraordinary. "''Mr. Clinton has been arraigned for the murder of Mai Lim, a Chinese national. A statement issued by a Clinton spokesperson denies the charge and promises a vigorous defense in the courts. However an informed source with local law enforcement suggests that the former President was found in bed with the dead, bleeding corpse of Ms. Lim, a straight razor nearby with his fingerprints on it, and a large amount of cocaine in his bloodstream.'" He looked up at his security chief. "How did they manage that, I wonder?"
"I can make inquiries, Prime Minister."
"Please do. I am curious." He looked back at the computer screen. "'Senator Clinton has no comment on the matter and is in seclusion. There is already speculation that her hitherto near certain reelection as Senator from New York has become somewhat less certain.' Well, one less problem to have to worry about."
"Yes, Prime Minister."

Twenty years ago the same people who are now crying global warming got cover stories on the same magazines with gobal cooling-- simply because their time sample is too short. What they are doing amounts to prediciting the entire year's weather based on what things were like for the last two weeks.
I'm sorry you feel you are being "bullied," but having been trained in and working with structural demolition for the US military when I was younger, and having an engineering background, I well understand what is written and called "scientific evidence" about the buildings in 9/11 well enough to know it isn't either scientific or evidence.
Pose wild questions if you want, but having blown up a few buildings, under controlled circumstances, while filming them, I know the kinds, types, and amounts of explosives needed to drop a steel structure, and the time and prep needed. That's why the structural engineers and demolitions people admit that what happened is outside their experience, but that they know it was not imploded by plan.
"What you see" on a video may not really reflect what is happening, and much of demolitions is based on testing, trial and error, because things happen that do not seem logical, and even when filmed don't seem to match what we know we set up, what we did, and the amounts of material used.
I've supervised a crew shooting 2000fps+ of explosive tests on steel beams, and at the same time the event was also shot at 24fps-- I know it was the same event, but things happened and went away between frames on the 24fps that were vital to understanding what happened, and that were only recorded in part at 2000fps.
This forum should stick to a broad base of motion picture, and more narrowly to ex-Soviet cameras, but I can't let the global warming and we blew it up bit pass without calling it what it is.

I take a Democrat candidate seriously for the same reason that I pay attention to the any individual or group of menacing strangers when I make a pizza delivery in a bad neighborhood. It is the reasonable expectation that they may harm me.
Over the last three decades that I have observed the Democrats I have noticed that not only do they persistently take a wrong position on an issue, they will often do so as a simple mindless negation of the Republican position.
Violent Crime: Don't accept as a fact of reality that it is an act of will on the part of the criminal. Don't apprehend, prosecute, imprison, or where warranted execute the criminal. Instead attack innocent people, disarm them, and leave them helpless in the face of a growing population of violent criminals.
That's just one example. I could go on about insanity of their positions on National Defense, Energy Policy, Taxation, etc. But I really don't have time to do so. (Unlike some folks on the Left I have to go to work.)
The Democrats are not just a party that has to be opposed on individual issues. They are demonstrating that (they) are following a mental methodology that consistently places them in opposition to reality. And reality is real, opposing it will hurt you.
So I'm supposed to live like a raccoon while this tubby f*ck drives a go-cart from room to room on his fabulous estate. I'm supposed to power my shower with a treadmill, but according to this editorial in the USA Today, Gore can't even be bothered to sign up for "earth friendly" power sources like wind energy, even though the utility companies that service his homes (he has three) in Tennessee and Washington DC offer it as an alternative.

And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, 'O Lord, bless this Thy hand grenade that, with it, Thou mayest blow Thine enemies to tiny bits in Thy mercy.' And the Lord did grin, and the people did feast upon the lambs and sloths and carp and anchovies and orangutans and breakfast cereals and fruit bats and large chu--...
And the Lord spake, saying, 'First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then, shalt thou count to three. No more. No less. Three shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, nor either count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then, lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.'
One look at the quantities involved really answers the question as to whether or not the Algerian build-up is a threat to France. The short answer is that it isn't. The Algerians would be outnumbered, and facing fighters at least as good as their new MiG-29s and Su-30s, if not better in some respects. This is before the French advantages in areas like airborne early-warning aircraft (France uses variations of the E-3 and E-2) and aerial refueling come into play. In short, a modern Franco-Algerian war is one that Algeria would lose in the air, even though they would be fighting the French.

There is something endearing about the 65 believers gathered in Canada's capital of capitalism this weekend for a convention on communism.
First off, it takes chutzpah to call 65 people a convention. Then there are the facts: The collapse of the USSR and the Soviet bloc, Fidel Castro's fragile health, and the triumphs of Microsoft and Google and Wal-Mart. Doesn't phase them.
"The first airplanes didn't work, the pilots died, but the principles of the first flying machines were excellent." says delegate Antonio Artuso, 61, by way of explaining communism's failure to thrive in the 20th Century, and his continuing belief that it will one day triumph.
