Personal History

During a Science Fiction convention I wore a button that read GODLESS CAPITALIST.  A woman made up like a Next Generation Klingon declared I was a Ferengi.  I replied that I was an Objectivist and that I read the works of Ayn Rand.  She was confused.  Some people REALLY need to think outside their box.

Personal History

One of my neighbors had a Jaguar E type convertible when I was growing up.

Birthday

The age of sixty four hits me today.  On this day in 1960 I was born.  There were no signs and portents in the sky and the most important thing to happen on that day was a performance by a garage band from Liverpool in a West German strip joint.  A copy of The Sensuous Dirty Old Man by "Doctor A" (Issac Asimov) would be nice.  I'm so old that I remember when Saturday Night Live was actually funny.  I'm so old that I remember when The Blue Danube was a waltz and not a soundtrack for spaceflight.  When I was stationed at Fort Benning I purchased a copy of On War by Clausewitz.  Every time time I read it I would always go to sleep.

Grocery Run

The Superior Person was deliberately blocking the side entrance of the Parker Skyview building.  I had to use the main entrance and walk around to the loading area to avoid a confrontation.

On Personal History And Scientology

I attended a campaign rally during the 2008 campaign season held in a large hangar at the Anoka County Airport.  One could actually play Football in the hangar.  A TSA officer told that 13,000 people showed up.  450 people showed up for an Ideal Org opening.

Police Stupdity In Action

We’ve seen fictional police officers that were stupid.  The roof that that the young man who attempted to murder President Trump was operating from was in the police area of control.

I have my own story of police stupidity.  I lived in a house on the corner of 24th Street and Humboldt Avenue.  (About a block from Lake Of The Isles.)  Lyndale Avenue ran straight North and South.  Hennepin Avenue ran diagonally Northeast and Southwest.  The crossing point was a lighted intersection.  I was crossing East on the Green light in my car (which was based on the Chevy Citation platform but was badged as a Buick.) when a Chevy Camero on Lyndale Avenue ran the red light then impacted on my car.  The point of impact was the Left wheel well.  The force of the impact spun my car to face West.  Despite physical evidence and eyewitness testimony (including my own.) the police report stated I was driving West.

Anniversary

On March 10, 1982 I enlisted in the United States Army.  The recruiting station was a former service station on the corner of 22th St. and Central Ave.  It was snowing that day.  When anyone at Fort Benning inquired where I was from my usual answer was, "the Soviet Socialist Republic of Minnesota."  The Cold War was on at the time.

Conscience is the expression of the ego in the moral realm.  To make a moral judgment and to act on it are basically selfish acts.  It's the self that sees through its own eyes and acts on its own knowledge of right and wrong.  You couldn't be selfish if you can't live with yourself.  Rational Selfishness as defined and advocated by Ayn Rand was limited to acts which benefited one's self but caused no harm or inflicted a cost on another person.  The narcissist, especially in the political realm, isn't concerned with the injuries and burdens inflicted on other people.  In fact, the more destructive the consequences of obedience to those who obey the narcissist, the better.  Human sacrifice with beating hearts cut out and victims flayed alive, that's great.  Millions worked to death in slave labor camps in Siberia, as far as the narcissist is concerned that's better.  In order for me to say, "I, Leslie Bates, do solemnly swear to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America..." I have to say "I". That was my ego speaking when I took the oath of enlistment.

As a combat riflemen (MOS 11 B) I opposed conscription.  I did so in 1982 and I'm doing so now.  Some people have a problem with persons acting on their conscience.  I don't.  When I was enlisted in the United States Army the Army was going though several transitions.  The Army was transitioning from the M1 steel pot to the first generation of the K-pot helmet.  The Army was transitioning from the M60A3 tank to the first generation of the M1 Abrams tank with the 105mm rifled gun.  The Army was transitioning from the M113A1 APC to the first generation of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle.  The Army was transitioning from the Huey helicopter to the first generation of the Blackhawk helicopter.

Opinion And Personal History

Monsters don't believe they're doing harm.

During Basic Training and when I was posted at Fort Benning I always answered an inquiry as to my state of origin with: The Soviet Socialist Republic Of Minnesota.

Personal History

During the 2004 campaign season when I was a pizza delivery driver I encountered a Volvo station wagon on a run with a photo of the Democratic Party candidate pasted on it like an Eastern Orthodox icon.

I thought: We're not facing a political faction, we're facing a f**ing cult!

Removal Of A Problem

When I was stationed at Fort Benning I had a dermoid cyst under the right eyebrow.  The cyst caused pain and my right eye to malfunction.  The cyst was a problem.  The cyst was removed.

The Scientology organization believes they’re important.  In fact the Scientology organization is a problem.  The Scientology organization will eventually be removed.

Personal History

When I was involved with the U of M Objectivist Club we never harassed any opponent of Objectivism.  Although we were harassed by Campus Commies.  Scientology has to harass it's opponents.

Personal History

When I was growing up Downtown Minneapolis had an interesting (not always nice) collection of shops, restaurants, and cinemas.  I had an after school job cleaning two Fanny Farmer candy shops.  I bought a large part of my early collection of Science Fiction novels, along with magazines such as ANALOG, STARLOG, CINEFANTASTIQUE, and CINEMAGIC at Shinder's on Seventh.  Thanks to Comrade Gruen and like minded drones in the city government all of the neat parts of Downtown Minneapolis have been replaced through the abuse of eminent domain by a collection of dull and souless structures whose primary function is to generate property tax revenues.

Feh!

Personal History

The very first thing taught during Infantry Basic Training in the spring of 1982 was that there was no such thing as a valid excuse.  There are some people using Democracy as an excuse for Tyranny.
